Christ’s Hospital is unique. We are strikingly unlike any other independent school in the UK, with a richly diverse pupil body, in terms of ethnicity and socio-economic background. More than 75% of our pupils are on some form of financial support, with a considerable number receiving full bursaries. In recognition of this, and of the school’s work in Performing Arts, we were recently awarded ‘Independent School of the Year 2024 / 2025’ as well as ‘Performing Arts School of the Year 2024 / 2025’ at the Independent Schools’ Awards. We are seeking to appoint a dedicated and experienced Head of Academic Drama to continue our excellent work in this area from September 2025.

The successful applicant will have a passion for academic excellence and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of theatre makers. The role will focus on maintaining and improving the achievements in the department, whilst also being involved in the considerable co-curricular work that we do at the school. They should be able to deliver the management of teaching and learning, enhancing curriculum provision and instilling high academic expectations. As an independent school, a PGCE is not necessary for teaching here, and we would consider those who are currently working in industry or in tertiary education. The successful candidate must be able to lead a strong academic team and would ideally have had experience of managing or leading others. They will be required to teach Drama up to A level and beyond.

Applicants should evidence in the personal statement how they meet the requirements of the role and person specification. Salary is commensurate with experience and paid in accordance with the Christs’ Hospital Teachers’ Salary scale up to £48,177 per annum supplemented by an allowance starting at £8,160 as a head of department. Full participation in the broader life of this busy boarding community is essential and accommodation on-site may be available.
