We seek to appoint from September 2025 an enthusiastic and effective Head of English who is passionate about his/her subject and with an excellent record as a classroom practitioner. This opportunity offers applicants either a chance to move into management for the first time as a Head of Department, or it enables an existing Head of English to gain further experience.

The successful applicant will have strong leadership potential or previous experience, and a real desire to promote the subject throughout the School, to manage a team of staff and to contribute to the wider team of Heads of Department in a highly academic environment. We seek a Head of Department who will continue to impart a love of both reading and writing English, and an enjoyment of English Literature which is already in evidence throughout the School. The successful candidate will also join a thriving department team where high standards are expected of staff as well as pupils, in a lively and supportive atmosphere.

Members of the Department are responsible for areas of the School’s exciting extra-curricular life. They run the School’s public speaking and debating teams which enjoy success in a number of local and national competitions each year (Runners up in the ESU Mace National Debating Competition 2024), as well as the Creative Writing Club which publishes an annual magazine, Model United Nations Club, and the Alsama Project through which volunteer Sixth Form pupils offer English reading support to Syrian refugees, teaching them online. The Department also regularly enters students for external creative writing competitions, and hosts the ESU’s Performing Shakespeare Competition in which we have often triumphed.
