Bury Grammar School aims to be the leading academic institution and the school of first choice for pupils, parents and staff in the area. We are seeking to appoint, from September 2026, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic Teacher of English to join our high achieving English Faculty.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding classroom practitioner who is passionate about both English Language and English Literature, and who is eager to contribute fully to the wider life of the school.

The Faculty

The English faculty at Bury Grammar School is a thriving, collaborative and academically ambitious team. We work closely together to nurture excellent outcomes for all pupils and are committed to delivering the highest standards of teaching and learning.

Our forward-looking curriculum provides pupils with a strong grounding in literary and linguistic study, enabling them to develop as confident communicators and informed, critical thinkers. Our pupils are interested, ambitious and creative learners who enjoy their English lessons and achieve excellent academic results, with both English Language and English Literature remaining popular and successful choices at A Level.

The faculty works in partnership with the school’s librarians to cultivate a strong reading culture across the school and to instil a genuine love of reading and learning. Beyond the classroom, we offer an extensive programme of enrichment opportunities, including theatre visits, study days, author events, debating activities, public speaking competitions, alongside our own creative writing and book clubs, and we seek to add to our extracurricular programme through the strengths and interests of our team.

The Role

The successful candidate will:

Teach English Language and English Literature from Key Stage 3 up to A Level.

Deliver high quality, engaging and structured lessons that inspire and challenge pupils.

Assess, monitor and report on pupil progress effectively.

Contribute to the ongoing development of the English curriculum.

Support pupils' academic progress and wider personal development.

Play an active role in the wider life of Bury Grammar School, including co‑curricular enrichment.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a teacher who:

Holds a degree in English or a closely related subject and has Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Demonstrates strong subject knowledge across both Language and Literature at secondary level.

Is reflective, organised, and committed to ongoing professional growth.

Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and enjoys working as part of a collaborative team.

Is committed to safeguarding, inclusion, and the welfare of children and young people.

Brings enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to their teaching.
