City of London School - German Language Assistant

  • East London

  • City of London School

  • Full-time

Summary

We are currently seeking to fill the position of German Language Assistant .

Detail

An enthusiastic and well-qualified graduate is required from September 2025 to teach German.

  • French is compulsory from the First to Third Forms (Years 7-9). Mandarin is compulsory (two lessons a week) in the First and Second Form. In the Third Form boys must choose three options from a range of subjects. It is at this stage that German (and Spanish) may be taken up. Russian is an option from the Fourth Form (Year 10).
  • French, German, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish are all taught to IGCSE (GCSE for Russian) and A-Level.
  • A minimum of one language is compulsory at IGCSE but the majority of boys usually take two. A considerable number manage to fit in three and even four is not unheard of.
  • The department moved to IGCSE (CIE board), with the first set of results in 2012. Russian candidates sit the Edexcel GCSE. All boys take their IGCSEs in the Fifth Form (Year 11), with the exception of the majority of the Russianists who sit IGCSE French in the Fourth Form (Year 10).
  • In the Sixth Form, pupils in French, German and Spanish sit the AQA A-Level. Russian candidates sit the Edexcel A-Level. In Mandarin, we have our own bespoke Sixth Form course; pupils work towards the HSK qualification and also take an EPQ related to some aspect of Chinese society or culture.
  • Facilities for the teaching of languages at the City of London School are generally excellent and resource funding is generous. We have ten classrooms each equipped with a screen and docking station for a laptop. The department is fortunate to have five language assistants (two French, one German, one Mandarin and one Spanish) to help with conversation practice. The assistants have their own large open-plan workspace. There are thirteen classroom teachers in the department, plus the five assistants.
  • Trips abroad form a significant part of the departments work. Recent trips have included a Sixth Form French trip to Lyon, a homestay visit to Angers for Third and Fourth Formers and a trip to Normandy for First Form; an exchange with Hamburg; a Spanish trip to Granada and a trip to China. When there has been sufficient demand there have also been trips to Russia.
  • There are a number of different societies, ranging from a Chinese Culture Club to a Modern Languages Film Society to a Linguistics Club, often run by older pupils.
  • The post holder will actively seek to implement the Corporation of Londons Equal Opportunity Policy and the Corporation of Londons objective to promote equality of opportunity in relation to the duties of their post.

CLS was named by the Sunday Times as London Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020, and occupies fine, modern buildings near St. Pauls Cathedral overlooking the Thames, opposite the Tate Modern. There are impressive off-site sports facilities in south east London.

CLS is fully committed to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. We have a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Forum for staff, and another for pupils, which are used to help drive progress forward.

It is a top priority for the School that we both attract and retain a staff body that is not only excellent, but also reflects the London community within which we live, and our diverse pupil body. As such, it is of paramount importance to the School that we acknowledge our current imbalance and seek to rectify this. We are therefore particularly keen to encourage applications from candidates who have African Caribbean, Asian or other Minority Ethnic or mixed heritage. All appointments are merit-based, following a fair, transparent recruitment process. In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, however, the School may employ positive action where diverse candidates demonstrate the ability to perform the role equally well.
