MFL Department Information

The Department of Modern Foreign Languages is a leading department at Francis Holland School. It is the largest department in the school, consisting of nine teachers and three language assistants as well as a visiting teacher in Italian. Being located in an area of central London close to embassies, the French Lycée and other cultural centres, as well as to the City, we benefit from a cosmopolitan intake, attracting many girls from a bilingual or multilingual background who are always very open to discovering new cultures and to learning new languages.

All girls learn French from Years 7 to 9, with many of them opting to take it to IGCSE. In Year 8 a second language is introduced, with pupils choosing either Spanish or German. All girls need to select at least one of their languages at IGCSE, but many will study two. MFL is a popular subject at the school and many girls benefit from the bilingual curriculum and clubs that take place for native speakers of French, German and Spanish.

Results at IGCSE level are always amongst the very best in school, and we pride ourselves on opposing the national trend of declining numbers at A-level. At Francis Holland School, A-level subject choices for all languages is strong. All MFL department members contribute to the enrichment activities, and we encourage all staff to take an active role in the trips abroad. The department has a long-standing tradition of excellence and commitment from its staff and a positive, collaborative approach to both the curriculum and co-curricular activities is vital.
