The School
The King’s School is one of the dozen oldest schools in the country and has a proud heritage dating back to at least 1087, with a re-foundation in 1541. King’s is the Cathedral School in the city of Gloucester, whilst the surrounding county is home to many excellent grammar and state schools, as well as other independent schools. King’s is held in high regard amidst this competitive area; our academic, co-curricular and pastoral attainment is second to none. As a result, the last three ISI reports for King’s have all been classified as ‘excellent’ in every area. Local media brand SoGlos has awarded King’s the title of ‘Independent School of the Year’ or ‘Highly Commended’ in every one of the last five years – a feat unmatched by any other local independent school. Despite the multiple national-scale challenges of recent years, King’s has seen its pupil roll growing steadily and parental satisfaction scoring very highly indeed. With careful investment in the campus and facilities, as well as a continuous focus on improving teaching and learning and developing our outstanding pastoral care, King’s is now seen as a dynamic, forward-thinking and impressive place to study and to work.
The Department
The Business & Economics Department is an energetic, supportive and innovative environment in which to work. We deliver an active, engaging and inspiring course that reflects the demands of an evolving business environment. The Schemes of Work allow for flexibility so teachers can tailor their teaching to their class, ensuring that all pupils make the best possible progress.
The teaching of Business & Economics takes place in the newly refurbished 7 College Green building. Bright, open classrooms immediately overlook Gloucester Cathedral and teachers have access to a wealth of resources. IT is central to lessons, with pupils bringing their own devices and the majority of lessons using Teams. The Department has engineered many links with the local community and take part in national competitions in order to bring greater realism into the lessons. We have run trips to New York, London’s financial district and to universities, and arranged for speakers to give talks to Business & Economics students on a range of topics.
Timetable, induction and training
The School operates to a ten-day timetable cycle, consisting of 60 periods. Full-time members of staff teach 48 periods per cycle. Early Career Teachers receive a 10% minimum reduction in their allocation in their first year for training and induction – this reduces to 5% in the second year of induction. The King’s School has a strong record of training and developing teachers in situ, and there are opportunities for further development at every level.
