Part-time Teacher of Drama – Junior School 

Loretto School is one of Britain’s leading independent boarding and day schools located on the outskirts of Edinburgh and we have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join our team as our Teacher of Drama within the Junior school. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate part-time Teacher of Drama (0.2 FTE), who is committed to the quality of learning and teaching and will provide an engaging and inspiring experience for our pupils. The successful applicant will be a teacher who understands the importance of this role as well as the broader task of conveying interest and passion for the subject in and beyond the classroom.  

This role involves teaching Junior School Drama classes and implementing the Junior School’s policy for Drama, which emphasises participation, enthusiasm, performance and the early nurturing of performance skills. The Junior School Drama Teacher will meet regularly with the Head of the Junior School and maintain strong links with Senior School colleagues. The role is timetabled for one day per week, on Fridays. Additional hours will be expected and remunerated leading up to performance dates.  

We are looking for a candidate with high expectations of students. They will maintain and develop the high quality of achievements demonstrated in recent years and promote a love of the subject inside and outside the classroom. 

The successful candidate is expected to possess the following qualities: 

• To be a qualified and experienced classroom teacher with the ability to take responsibility for Junior School classroom teaching and learning in Drama for pupils in Years 4-7.
• To create and promote performance opportunities for children, inside and outside the classroom. 
• To direct the Junior Play for Y4 and Y5 pupils and the Musical for Y6 and Y7 pupils. 
• Ability to enrich the curriculum and teaching programme through the usage of exciting and stimulating teaching practices and appropriate learning aids including technology.
• Ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with students ,parents and peers to foster positive interaction and promote student retention.
• Ability to create and maintain an inclusive learning environment and culture that embraces future-focused education and one in which students are motivated, inspired and challenged. 
• Ability to work in a large team of people in a dynamic school.
• Good administration and communication skills.
• Embodiment of the school’s KILT values: kindness, integrity, loyalty and tenacity.

About the Junior School

Loretto Junior School is East Lothian’s leading independent Junior School for children aged 3 to 12 – with around 150 girls and boys in attendance. We enjoy an ideal location, right on the west bank of the River Esk and next to the local beach. Our catchment area is wide and we are easily accessed from Midlothian, Edinburgh and the Borders, with an extensive school transport service. 

We are predominantly a day school but every year we welcome a number of boarders from age 11. Our Pre-School (ages 3 to 5) and Early Years (ages 5 to 7) are based at Eskbank, while Years 4 to 7 (ages 8 to 12) are at North Esk Lodge.

The North Esk Lodge is also the Junior School’s busy hub for both all pupils, situated on a site close enough to the Senior School to share its facilities, but separate enough to allow our younger children to feel secure and happy in their own independent environment.
