New Hall School is seeking a compassionate and motivated EAL Instructor (Residential) to support English language learners aged 5–19. This residential role offers the chance to make a real difference to international students, helping them develop confidence, fluency, and independence both academically and socially.

You will be part of the New Hall English Language Academy, working closely with subject teachers, and boarding teams, to provide tailored support through small group, one-to-one sessions, and co-curricular activities. The role also involves contributing to EAL provision in the evenings, and during some half terms.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for those with a passion for educating students, and who want to broaden their teaching experience outside of the usual classroom framework. Training will be provided if you do not have relevant experience in EAL. This role would suit a Preparatory / Primary trained teacher, ideally with experience teaching Year 5 and 6. This would allow you to employ, with creativity, what you know about pedagogy to enhance EAL students’ access to curricular subjects.

Living on-site allows you to be involved fully in the vibrant boarding community, promoting an immersive English-speaking environment.

Key responsibilities:

to support students in developing English proficiency to better access and succeed in their curricular subjects
to deliver one-to-one and small group EAL sessions
to provide support across subjects and adapt learning materials to students’ needs
to monitor student progress and communicate observations to staff
to encourage students' willingness to develop their English language proficiency outside of the school day in various activities (e.g. reading circles)
to supervise boarders on trips, excursions, and cultural events
to contribute to EAL residential courses outside term time

The successful candidate will be expected:

to support and to contribute to the Catholic ethos of the School, as outlined in the Mission & Ethos Statement and Aims of the School
to be educated to degree level with a minimum of a 2:1 (or above)
to have excellent communication, organisational, and teamwork skills
to demonstrate patience, cultural sensitivity, and empathy when working with young people
to have a clear understanding of safeguarding and the welfare of children
to demonstrate a positive, engaging and proactive attitude
to have an understanding of the principles of Enquiry Led Education, or a willingness to learn
to show commitment to ongoing professional development in the field of TESOL
to hold at least a diploma level qualification in TEFL/TESOL or equivalent
to have previous experience of working in a School, particularly as a Preparatory/ Primary Year 5 or 6 teacher
to have experience supporting young people and/or delivering EAL sessions
to have knowledge of the UK National Curriculum
to be bi-lingual
to have familiarity with Cambridge, and IELTS
to have experience of working in a boarding school environment
to demonstrate awareness of the cultural and social challenges faced by students with English as an additional language

New Hall School offers an exceptional working environment. The main campus occupies the stunning Grade I listed former Tudor palace of Beaulieu. The School’s conference and events venue is at the Grade I listed Boreham House, one mile away. New Hall is a warm, welcoming, and supportive community, with a staff of around 300.

Beaulieu Park railway station is at the entrance to New Hall’s Avenue: 30 minutes to Stratford and 38 minutes to London Liverpool Street.
