St Catherine's School - Head of Organ Studies and School Organist

Summary

St Catherine’s School seeks to appoint from September 2026 a well-qualified, enthusiastic and energetic graduate to join its highly successful and collegiate Music Department as Music Teacher, Head of Organ Studies and School Organist.

Detail

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented organist and committed educator to play a central role in the academic, co‑curricular and liturgical life of the School, and to build on an already thriving organ tradition.

The successful candidate will be a high‑level organist (ideally ARCO or equivalent) and an inspiring teacher, able to prepare pupils to diploma level and for Oxbridge organ scholarships, an area in which the School has enjoyed considerable success. They will have strong keyboard and sight-reading skills, as well as strong ICT skills for administration and record taking and will take a leading role in coordinating the annual Jennifer Bate Organ Academy.

In the classroom, the post-holder will teach academic Music across the Senior School, including A Level and Oxbridge entry, with a strong ability in Harmony. The role also includes teaching individual organ (and, if required, piano) lessons across the School and contributing widely to the co‑curricular musical life.

As School Organist, the successful candidate will share responsibility for Chapel music, working closely with the Director of Music, Chaplain and Chapel staff, and playing for a range of midweek and Sunday services during term time.

The role also includes: chamber coaching, accompanying choirs, ensembles, productions, concerts, examinations and festivals, assisting with Senior School Informal Concerts, acting as Assistant Musical Director for whole-school musical productions and playing a proactive role in all departmental activities and school events.

The post would suit:

  • An experienced teacher seeking promotion or a change of scene, or
  • A talented music graduate at the start of their career; for the right candidate, there is the opportunity to undertake school‑based Initial Teacher Training through St Catherine’s long‑established and highly successful ITT programme.

St Catherine’s enjoys close links with Holy Trinity Church, Bramley, located a short walk from the School, and organ scholars regularly play for services by their Upper Sixth year.
