St Peter's School York - Teacher of Art

Summary

A well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Art is required for September 2026.

Detail

Department: Art

Responsible to: The Head Master

Grade/Salary: The starting salary will be at a point on the St Peter’s Teacher’s Pay Scale

The Post

A well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Art is required for September 2026. The successful applicant will be expected to teach key stage 3; the ability to offer GCSE and A Level teaching would be an advantage.

The available post is 0.5 FTE (16 periods of teaching per week) but please be aware that we are also recruiting a teacher of Design and Technology (0.5 FTE) and applications are welcomed from teachers who can offer both subjects and are seeking a full-time role.

The roles would suit someone relatively new to the profession or a more experienced teacher seeking a new opportunity.

The Art Department

The department currently has four art teachers and two technicians, who offer technical support and help during practical lessons. The department works closely together, with members of the team supporting each other and sharing ideas. Learning resources are developed by all colleagues and shared with the department.

The department is well resourced with large drawing and painting studios, printmaking facilities, a photographic darkroom, an extensive library and computer suite and our own exhibition space, The Whitestone Gallery. From September 2026, all pupils in years 7 to 11 will have individual Microsoft Surface Pro devices to support and enhance their learning.

All pupils study art at key stage 3 and the subject is a very popular choice at GCSE. Pupils currently follow the OCR Art & Design: Fine Art specification. At A level, pupils follow the OCR A Level Fine Art specification.

At all ages and stages, expectations are high and results are strong. Pupils are motivated to succeed and willingly spend considerable time outside of their timetabled lessons working in the department. For A level pupils, life drawing classes are held in the Autumn Term and visits to major galleries and cultural sites are integral to the course.

Other Opportunities

The school works a busy six day week and the person appointed will be expected to play an active part in the school’s house system and in its co-curricular life. The School’s co-curricular programme is broad and is well-supported by the teaching staff.

We would expect the successful applicant to support the co-curricular activities offered by the Art department, including running an Art club for Year 7 and 8 pupils. Wider involvement in the co-curricular programme would be encouraged.

Most teachers at St Peter’s also take on pastoral roles as tutors in either a day house or a boarding house.
