Post: Technical Director

Salary: £29,975- £30,756, dependent upon previous experience (Point 10-Point 11 on the Support Pay Scale prorated)

We seek to appoint a suitably experienced person to the position of Technical Director from January 2026.

Overall purpose of the post:

To support the work of the Drama and Music department and be responsible for all technical areas within St Peter’s School’s Memorial Hall and other school venues. To operate and maintain and the technical assets of the school, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of event facilities.

Core duties

  • To be responsible for all tasks relating to the provision of sound, lighting and staging for productions, school events, assemblies as required across 2-18.
  • To support Drama and Music staff with the day-to-day use of sound, lighting and staging as required.
  • To provide external speakers with support in the use of the school’s sound system and ensure suitable lighting and staging is rigged as needed.
  • To encourage pupils to work with the sound, lighting systems and staging to develop their interest in this area. This also feeds through to curriculum elements for GCSE and A level Drama where appropriate.
  • To organise regular servicing to maintain the school’s sound and lighting systems. To check regularly on the school’s stock of microphones, lights and associated accessories to ensure that they function properly for events.
  • To lead in the assembly and construction of staging, lighting and sound for school productions including liaising with external providers to hire additional equipment and personnel as required.
  • Managing the production elements of school productions, and also GCSE and A level practical performances.
  • Management of a budget (with support and oversight) in relation to all aspects of spend needed.
  • To ensure the Memorial Hall and Shepherd Hall are kept in good order and are safe at all times.
  • To work within Health and Safety at Work regulations and COSHH.
  • To be First Aid trained to support after school events when required.
  • To undertake safeguarding training in line with the school’s policy on an annual basis.

To assist in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteers or paid technical staff for individual events.

Liaising with the staff to bring to attention any matters of importance; including attending weekly operations meetings in order to assist in the technical and client liaison aspects of the mounting an event.

Line management

  • The technical director will report to the Co-Curricular Deputy, but work closely with the Director of Music and Heads of Drama
  • This is a support role but includes some teaching within the Drama curriculum where need to support pupils in their studies. This could fall under the Head of Drama or Director of Operations.

Hours of work

The post-holder is expected to work within the hours of 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday up to 12.40pm as needed, with flexibility to start/finish times as needed to average 37.5 hours per week.

In addition to this, evening and weekend work will be needed at different points during the year for which flexibility is required.

This is a term time contract over 38 weeks, with four of those weeks paid in lieu of, and to reflect, the evening and weekend work throughout the academic year.
