The Edinburgh Academy - Visiting Music Teacher - Bass and Tenor Drum

  • Scotland

  • The Edinburgh Academy

  • Part-time

Summary

We are currently seeking to fill the position of Visiting Music Teacher - Bass and Tenor Drum .

Detail

Our Pipe Band and piping and drumming students play an important part in our music department, with some students also being part of the CCF.  The Pipe Major is supported by two permanent instructors (piping and drumming) who provide lessons across the two Schools as well leading our award-winning bands.  Our bank of Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs) allows us to offer an impressive array of musical opportunities for our students.

VMTs have a direct billing relationship with the parents / guardians of their students. The School sets a minimum charge for lessons and applies a Facility Charge for use of the resources within the School.

The School believes that music can play an important part in the education of young people.  The Music Departments at both Schools comprise a Head or Director of Music as well as a curricular music teacher. There is also a Head of Strings and a Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion that work across both Schools to support the various bands, groups, orchestras, ensembles and choirs as well as teach their respective instruments.

Both our Junior and Senior School campuses are ideally situated in the Stockbridge area, with the Junior School located next to the Botanic Gardens and the Senior School at Henderson Row.  Visiting Music Teachers are welcomed into the School community and given the use of the School's resources and facilities as above.

The Edinburgh Academy is seeking to expand the bank of self-employed Visiting Music Teachers (VMT) within the Pipe Band Team; specifically, an experienced and enthusiastic Bass and Tenor Drum Teacher from August 2025. We anticipate this will require a commitment of one and a half days of teaching per week, potentially increasing to up to 2 full days.

We welcome applications from well-qualified music graduates with relevant teaching qualifications and/or experience, with a proven track record in teaching pupils from primary to S6. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic person with a passion to develop the Bass Drum and Tenor Drum programme of The Edinburgh Academy. Teaching can be situated across both sites of the Academy – Arboretum and Henderson Row.

The Academy sets a minimum charge for lessons and requires the VMT to pay a Facility Charge for the use of resources within the School. As a self-employed VMT, there is a direct relationship between the VMT and parent and the VMT is responsible for invoicing parents directly in respect of their agreed tuition fees.

The VMT may have the opportunity for group coaching, or be required throughout the year to support school rehearsals or competitions such as CCF events, RSPBA and Non-RSPBA competitions as well as other events. Such involvement would be remunerated at the hourly rate for that year.

Conditions of Appointment

The appointment will be subject to interview and audition, satisfactory references, verification of identity and proof of qualifications.

Child Protection

The Edinburgh Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and PVG Disclosure Scotland.

Equal Opportunities

The school is an Equal Opportunities employer and welcomes applications for this post from appropriately qualified persons regardless of age, disability, gender, race or sexual orientation.
