Salary: Westminster Under School has its own salary scale, and new members of staff are placed at a point relevant to their qualifications and experience. Details of salary will be discussed at interview with those candidates who are shortlisted.

We are looking for an experienced and well-qualified Teacher of PE to play a pivotal role in helping to provide an outstanding co-educational PE, Games and sports programme across the Under School, promoting sporting excellence and physical literacy, while ensuring high levels of participation, inclusivity, and enjoyment for all pupils.

The Sports Department at Westminster Under School is an incredibly busy and exciting place to be. Children at the School enjoy weekly PE lessons as part of the curriculum, most year groups have weekly swimming lessons at a local swimming pool, and all year groups have two Games sessions per week totally approximately four hours of activity time each week.

The School has 13 acres of grass-playing fields at Vincent Square, just across the road from the School, which include three full-sized football pitches, two grass cricket wickets, five tennis courts (both Astro and concrete), and twelve outdoor table tennis tables. 

The Sports Centre, just a five-minute walk away, offers exceptional indoor facilities: a hall large enough for five badminton courts, a full-sized basketball court, a climbing wall, two table tennis areas, a dance studio, a martial arts dojo, and a rowing suite.

Almost every child represents the School in sports fixtures. Alongside our core sports—football, netball, hockey, cricket, and tennis—we also offer cross country, rugby, swimming, basketball, handball, table tennis, golf, Eton Fives, ultimate frisbee, and skiing.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Curriculum and Teaching

• Plan and deliver high-quality co-educational PE lessons from Early Years, and Key Stages 1, 2, and 3 in line with Schemes of Work located on the Intranet and in line with the parallel class teachers.
• Play a major role in the planning and delivery of girls’ Games sessions for the major girls' sports (netball, hockey, football and cricket). 
• Provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment in which consideration is given to the individual development of all pupils.
• Ensure schemes of work are current, inclusive, and promote health, fitness, and skills development.
• Adapt learning and teaching and associated resources in a manner that challenges and interests the pupils and is appropriate to their needs and skill levels.
• Apply any recommendations and guidance for pupils with specific learning or welfare needs or disabilities, as directed by the SENDCo, or on the pupil’s personalised learning plan.
• Apply, judiciously and where appropriate, IT capability to enhance learning and teaching.
• Contribute to, and maintain consistency with, internal and relevant external marking schedules and moderation procedures.
• Engage pupils fully in the assessment and self-evaluation process.
• Carry out a range of formative assessments of pupils’ attainment to acknowledge and inform progress.
• Record and report on pupil progress and achievements in accordance with the Junior Department’s requirements, including formal reporting points such as parents’ evenings and written reports.
• Stay abreast of best practice in PE and sports education and implement relevant pedagogical strategies.

2. Games Programme

• Be involved in designing and delivering an engaging and competitive Games programme, including (but not limited to) netball, hockey, football, athletics, cricket, and tennis.
• Organise and manage school teams, fixtures, and tournaments.
• Attend and organise sports trips and tours.
• Attend lunch time practices, fixtures (including Saturdays), and events as required.•    Promote team spirit, sportsmanship, and resilience in all sporting activities.

3. Staff Development

• Mentor and support non-PE specialists and Games staff in their teaching and coaching roles.

4. Administration and Organisation

• Maintain records of fixtures, team selections, attendance, and results.
• Ensure risk assessments, medical protocols, and safeguarding policies are rigorously followed in all games and sports activities.

5. Communication and Promotion

• Act as a point of contact for relevant sporting matters within the School.
• Engage with parents regarding fixtures, events, and pupil progress.

6. Departmental and whole school matters

• Be involved in the development of the short, medium, and long-term vision of the department.
• Work with the rest of the department to implement a strategic vision for the PE and Games department which is aligned with the School’s values and co-curricular aims.
• Attend and contribute to regular departmental meetings, as well as contribute to whole-school sports planning.
• Be a visible and positive teacher, inspiring pupils and staff in the value of Games and Physical Education.

7. Pastoral care and pupil management 

• Put pupils at the centre of everything you do, taking a pastoral interest in pupils around the school environs, so that they feel valued and cared for.
• Monitor the work of class pupils, providing guidance, advice and support, and fostering self-esteem.
• Motivate pupils through praise, while being firm but fair.
• Actively maintain the high standards of behaviour and uniform of pupils in the classroom and in all school locations and activities.
• Write and maintain relevant records for individual pupil files and writing reports.
• Communicate, respond to and consult with parents on a regular basis maintaining records, as appropriate.  
• Communicate and consult with other departments or members of staff to implement recommendations, policies or guidance.

Additional Information:

This is a role that includes regular evening and weekend commitments. The successful candidate may also take on pastoral responsibilities such as a Form Tutor.

All teachers and staff are expected to: 

• Promote and support the School’s Aims and Vision and School Development Plan.
• Adhere to and support the School’s policies and procedures.
• Accept responsibility for the welfare and care of all pupils, at all times. 
• Undertake break and supervisory duties as designated by the Senior Management Team.
• Cover classes for absent colleagues as directed by Senior Management Team.
• Attend staff meetings, parents’ evenings and other meetings and school events, such as the Carol Service and open days, outside normal hours.
• Attend relevant school trips, normally including one residential visit per year.
• Undertake any other duties or tasks as the Master, the Deputy Master or the Governing Body may reasonably require.
• Engage positively in and contribute to INSET activities offered by the School.
• Be involved in new initiatives within the School as part of ongoing professional development.
• Take an active interest in maintaining subject knowledge, learning networks and current educational research.

From September 2026, Westminster Under School will have opened its brand new pre-prep for girls and boys at 4+ and girls will have joined boys in Years 3 and 7, at the 7+ and 11+ entry points. By 2030, with the introduction of girls into Year 9 at Westminster School in 2028, all year groups across the two schools, from ages four to 18, will be fully co-educational, reflecting the School’s dedication to inclusivity and excellence.
