Summary

Winchester College's Sports Department offers an outstanding and varied programme of physical activity. The College is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Fencing Coach to support the delivery of an enjoyable, safe, and progressive fencing club. This role involves coaching pupils across all levels of experience, from novices to competitive athletes, in conjunction with the Lead Fencing Coach and the Master-in-charge (M/ic) of Fencing.

The Role

The Fencing Coach works within the Sports Department, assisting the Lead Fencing Coach and M/ic Fencing to manage and develop the Fencing club.

Your key responsibilities include:

Coaching and Development

  • Session Delivery: Support the Lead Fencing Coach in the coaching of pupils during the designated Fencing 'ekker' (extra-curricular) sessions throughout the week.
  • Progressive Structure: Help harness pupils' enthusiasm and provide a progressive structure for self-development, catering to both novices and experienced fencers.
  • Safety: Ensure the delivery of an enjoyable, safe, and successful club by following the appropriate risk-assessed fencing procedures.

Administration and Competition Support

  • Attendance Management: Support the M/ic Fencing in managing the attendance of club members via the Socs co-curricular system.
  • Match Support: Offer support, coaching, and officiating at school matches when requested and available.
  • Events: Potentially support the delivery of a demonstration session / event for parents and guests on Wykeham Day.


About You

We are looking for a highly qualified coach with significant experience working with young athletes and a deep understanding of competitive fencing and athlete development.

Essential Requirements

  • Coaching Qualification: A qualified coach to at least Level 2 from British Fencing.
  • Experience: Significant experience of coaching children across varying levels of ability and physical maturity.
  • Athlete-Centred Approach: Possess an athlete-centred approach to training and interacting with pupils.
  • High-Level Competition: Experience of competing at a high level of competition to prepare pupils for inter-school matches and individual championships.
  • Performance Knowledge: An awareness and understanding of the importance of physical conditioning in relation to improved performance.
  • Academic Balance: An understanding of the need to balance sporting opportunity with academic performance.


Terms and Conditions

  • Start Date: January 2026.
  • Hours of Work: This is a zero-hours position (hours will vary based on the extra-curricular schedule).
  • Salary: Your hourly rate will be £27 per hour.
