Winchester College - Relief Matron

Summary

Winchester College is seeking a number of Relief Matrons to provide pastoral care, safeguarding, and wellbeing support for approximately 70 pupils within our boarding houses, including our new girls’ boarding house, St Cross. This role involves covering the Matron’s 30-hour off-duty period (31 occasions per academic year). The Relief Matron is required to sleep overnight in the boarding house and remain "on call" via mobile phone to respond to emergencies. Candidates ideally will be able to work across at least two houses.

Detail

The Role

Accountable to the House Don and working under the direction of the Matron, the Relief Matron oversees the domestic staff and maintains the smooth running of the house during their duty period.

Key Responsibilities:

• Pupil Welfare & Medical: Run morning, lunch, tea, and evening surgeries. Dispense medication in accordance with regulations, attend to minor ailments, and escort pupils to appointments or the Health and Wellbeing Centre.
• Administration: Maintain accurate records of illnesses and treatments, manage parent emails under guidance, and complete iSAMS registers and medical status logs.
• Safeguarding: Actively support the safety and welfare of pupils, reporting any concerns via the online CPOMS system.
• Operational Oversight: Supervise domestic staff during the cover period, ensure a detailed handover with the Matron, and assist the House Don with house events or exam isolation as required.
• Health & Safety: Follow all fire procedures, maintain accident records, and attend College safety and safeguarding training.

• Pastoral Care: A friendly demeanor with a strong commitment to the safety and welfare of children.
• Efficiency: Ability to multi-task, prioritise effectively, and manage a fluctuating workload in a busy boarding environment.
• Technical Proficiency: Competent in the use of IT (for registers and reporting) and able to undertake first aid training provided by the College.
• Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
• Reliability: High levels of energy and enthusiasm, with a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
• Desirable: Possession of a personal car for use during emergencies or pupil appointments.

What We Offer

• Start Date: September 2026, with the option for an earlier start for suitable candidates.
• Working Hours & Pattern
• Duty Cycle: Cover is provided on 31 occasions per academic year, per house.
• Shift Structure: Typical duty involves specific "active" hours for surgery and meals, plus being "on call" overnight (22:30–07:00).
• Accommodation: Self-contained overnight ensuite accommodation is provided while on duty.

Annual Salary

• One Boarding House: £5,748.40 (gross) per annum.
• Two Boarding Houses: £11,496.80 (gross) per annum.
